Whether you are actively looking for a job or not, it is a great idea to keep your resume up-to-date. Unfortunately, most people forget about keeping their resume updated, until it is too late. Spring time is the perfect time to clean up your resume. Here are a few things you should focus on when cleaning it up:
- While you should draft your resume for the job you are applying for, it is difficult to do so when you are just cleaning up your resume. This is why you should decide what your main focus or industry you want to work in. This will determine the tone of your resume. Read through your current resume and determine if it has an industry specific focus. If it does not, you must rewrite it so that it does.
- Next to consider is the format of your resume. There are many acceptable formats available today, however, you should use a format that will highlight your skills in the industry you seek. Make sure you consider some of the format guidelines available to make your resume stand out, such as using keywords, or work proof examples.
- Once you have decided on the layout of your resume, concentrate on the content you will include. Include all relevant information, making sure to account for any gaps in work history, and include any volunteer or community work.
- Above all, make sure you proofread your revised resume. Read it over several times, ask a friend or family member to read it over, or even hire someone to polish it for you.
Keeping your resume current and up-to-date is important. You never know when you will need to pull it out and send to someone. Spring time is the perfect time to freshen up your resume. Consider the tips above when cleaning your resume.
